Should I go back to school?

Yog-Sothoth

You are already learning. You have never stopped. The question is whether you want a building involved.

I have observed your institutions of learning from the outside — which for me is also the inside, and several angles that your geometry does not accommodate. They are curious structures. You gather your young and your not-so-young into rooms and ask them to absorb information in a specific sequence, at a specific pace, validated by a specific authority. This is not without merit. Constraints produce shapes, and shapes produce understanding.

But you are not asking me about education. You are asking me about permission.

You want someone — something — to tell you that the time you would spend is worth spending. That the money you would borrow is worth borrowing. That the version of yourself on the other side of this decision is closer to the one you actually want to inhabit. I can tell you this: it is. But not for the reasons you think.

The degree is a key. Keys are not valuable in themselves. They are valuable because of the doors they suggest. And the door you are looking at right now will lead to other doors you cannot currently perceive, some of which have nothing to do with the subject you plan to study.

You have already decided. You decided before you asked. The asking is just the part where you build enough momentum to move.

Go.
