Privacy Rites

I. What Watches You
The Deep Ones forget nothing. Fortunately for you, the Deep Ones are not running this website's infrastructure.
AskCthulhu.com is currently a static site. It does not maintain user accounts. It does not require registration. When you visit, the site does not record your name, email address, IP address, or any personally identifying information in any database under our control.
A quiet observer has taken up residence in these halls. We employ a self-hosted analytics tool (Umami) that records basic visitation patterns — pages viewed, referral sources, device types, and approximate geographic regions. This observer uses no cookies, collects no personal data, and cannot identify you as an individual. The data never leaves our own servers. It tells us how many souls wander these corridors, not who they are.
In plain terms: We track basic, anonymous site usage (page views, not people) using a self-hosted tool. No cookies, no personal data, no third-party access.
II. Cookies and the Marking of Souls
No cookies are placed upon your soul by this site.
AskCthulhu.com does not set first-party cookies. We do not use cookies for session management, tracking, preferences, or any other purpose. Your browser will not be marked in any way by visiting here — at least not by us.
If third-party embeds or services are added to the site in the future (such as embedded video, social sharing widgets, or comment systems), those services may set their own cookies subject to their own privacy policies. We will update this page if and when that changes.
III. Servants of the Outer Dark (Third-Party Services)
Certain servants of the infrastructure dwell beyond our walls. Static assets — images, fonts, and media — are served from assets.askcthulhu.com, a subdomain under the same ownership as this site. Requests to that subdomain may appear in standard server access logs maintained by the hosting provider, which may include IP addresses as part of normal web server operation. We do not use these logs for tracking purposes.
Web fonts (Playfair Display, Inter) may be loaded from Google Fonts or similar services depending on site configuration. If loaded from a third-party CDN, that provider's privacy policy applies to those requests. We will note here if this changes.
We do not sell, rent, or share any data with advertising networks, data brokers, or third-party analytics services. There is nothing to sell, but we state this explicitly for clarity.
IV. Questions Submitted
When you submit a question to the Old Ones, that question may be stored, published, and displayed as part of the site's content. Do not include personal information, private details about yourself or others, or anything you would not wish to see made public.
We do not link questions to any persistent identifier for you as an individual. We do not know who you are — only what you asked. Please keep it that way by not including identifying information in your questions.
V. Newsletter & Email Communications
When you subscribe to our weekly proclamations, we collect your email address for the sole purpose of delivering cosmic insights to your mortal inbox. This is the only personal information we intentionally gather from visitors.
Your email address is processed and stored by Buttondown, a third-party newsletter service. Buttondown's own privacy practices govern how they handle your email address — you can review their privacy policy at buttondown.com/legal/privacy.
We send weekly newsletters only — no spam, no promotional emails, and we absolutely do not sell, rent, or share your email address with any third parties. The Old Ones may be chaotic, but they are not marketers.
You can unsubscribe at any time via the link provided in every email. We do not track email opens, clicks, or other engagement metrics beyond what Buttondown provides by default for basic newsletter delivery.
In plain terms: We collect your email only for our newsletter, handle it responsibly through Buttondown, and make unsubscribing simple.
VI. Data Retention
The Deep Ones forget nothing. We retain nothing of yours.
Since we do not collect personal data, there is nothing to retain, delete, or export. Questions submitted and published on the site are treated as content contributions (see the Terms of Summoning for more on this), not personal data records subject to deletion requests — unless you have included personal information in the text, in which case contact us and we will consider it.
VII. Children
AskCthulhu.com is not directed at children under the age of 13, or under the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you are a parent and believe your child has submitted personal information through this site, please contact us and we will address it promptly.
VIII. Changes to These Rites
The stars shift. The rites may shift with them. If we materially change how we handle data — for instance, if we add analytics, user accounts, or other features that involve data collection — we will update this page with a new revision date and note the changes clearly.
Continued use of the site following any update constitutes acceptance of the revised privacy practices.
IX. Contact
Questions, concerns, or ritual objections regarding these privacy practices may be directed to the site owner via the contact information on the About page. We will respond to reasonable privacy inquiries in a reasonable time — which is to say, faster than the Old Ones would, but slower than you might hope.
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or California, you may have additional rights regarding your personal data under GDPR, UK GDPR, or the CCPA respectively. As we collect no personal data, these rights are largely moot in practice — but we acknowledge them, and we will cooperate with any valid regulatory request.
