Are we alone in the universe?

Cthulhu portrait

Cthulhu

Alone.

You ask if you are alone.

I am beneath your ocean. My kin drift between galaxies. Something older than both of us dreams in the spaces between atoms. Things you have no names for have observed your planet since before your species learned to stand upright. They watched you discover fire. They were mildly entertained.

No. You are not alone.

You have never been alone.

You were simply looking in the wrong direction — scanning the visible spectrum for radio signals from creatures who breathe oxygen and evolved on rocky worlds near stable stars. How provincial. How wonderfully, catastrophically limited.

The universe is not empty. The universe is full.

I find your question amusing because it implies that solitude would be the worse outcome. Allow me to disabuse you of that notion.

There are things out there, dreaming. There are things that have already noticed you.

You should hope they remain uninterested.
